Chapter 23: Awakening
[Name] felt her upper body get lifted off the ground. She managed to blink her eyes open enough to notice Jack staring down at her in horror.
She felt as though sand was running down her arm, covering her burn mark. The wound the arrow had made in her back felt like a bullet hole.
"[Name], don't worry! You're going to be fine!" Jack sounded more like he was trying to assure himself as he brushed a few hairs back behind her ear.
She stared up at Jack as her eyes began to flutter in an attempt to keep them open.
"Please, don't shut your eyes," Jack begged as he grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly in despair.
"I'm trying," [Name] could hardly even get her voice out, "it hurts--"
Tears formed in Jack's eyes as he felt the warmth in [Name]'s hand begin to vanish.
"I love you..."
Jack opened his eyes as [Name] spoke again, seeing her smile as she closed her eyes and let everything become dark around her.
"No, no, no!" Jack panicked as he put his hand over her heart, only to find it was no longer beating. "Why would Pitch do something like this to us?" Jack whispered, Pitch's name hissing angrily between his lips as his tears escaped his eyes and landed on [Name]'s face.
He snapped his head upwards, staring at the Man in the Moon for a moment before screaming out, "Give her a part of my life! Give her my entire life if you have to! Just--don't let her die on me! Please!"
Jack let his head fall, defeated, and just sat holding [Name] against his chest, cradling her in his arms.
Jack opened his eyes again to see moonlight covering the area around him. He could feel [Name]'s heart slowly began to beat again, fluttering against his own chest.
He stared down at her as he noticed the tips of her hair turning white, like his, although it wasn't her entire head. The top of her head seemed to shine as small snowflakes formed like little flowers.
Her clothes began to form frost on the tips and the seams, twisting across her shirt and back.
Jack looked over at her arm and realized the sand was gone and she no longer had her scar. He also noticed that her skin was a lot paler than it was prior.
Jack looked down as she blinked open her eyes, a brilliant blue like his now, and looked over at him.
Jack bit his bottom lip and smiled, tears of joy threatening to escape his eyelids.
[Name] looked up at the moon and smiled, "I heard the moon, Jack..."
Jack looked up at the moon, and smiled wider before pulling [Name] into a tight embrace.
"Thank you, Manny," Jack whispered as [Name] pulled him closer to her.
